The Southern Africa Bird Challenge: 850 Species in 850 Days
Woodland Kingfisher
Have you ever felt the call of the wild, the irresistible pull of a challenge that combines adventure, skill and the wonders of nature? That’s exactly how I felt when I heard about the Southern Africa Bird Challenge. Starting January 1, 2025, birders will embark on a quest to identify and photograph 850 bird species in 850 days. It’s going to be a challenge, one that requires not only a deep love for birding but also unwavering determination, strategy, and perhaps a bit of luck.
What Is the Southern Africa Bird Challenge?
Inspired by the success of the Kruger Bird Challenge, this new endeavor raises the bar very high. The goal is simple in concept: document 850 unique bird species found across Southern Africa. This vast region, home to an incredibly diverse array of habitats—from arid deserts and lush wetlands to towering forests and expansive savannahs—offers one of the most exciting birding opportunities on the planet.
But this isn’t just about checking species off a list. To complete the challenge, participants must also photograph each bird, creating a visual record of their achievement. It’s a challenge that will test both patience and perseverance, demanding not just birding expertise but also photography skills.
Preparing for Day One: Starting with a Bang in Nature's Valley
The timing couldn’t be more perfect. Day one falls in the heart of summer, and I’ll be kicking off my journey in Nature’s Valley, South Africa. Known for its lush forests, winding rivers, and pristine beach, this birding hotspot promises a good head start. From the scarce Narina Trogon to the vibrant Knysna Turaco, Nature’s Valley is home to species that every birder dreams of spotting. I couldn’t imagine a better place to launch this journey!

The Challenges Ahead
While this challenge is incredibly exciting, it won’t be without its hurdles:
Logistical Challenges: Southern Africa is vast, comprising of Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Eswatini, Lesotho and South Africa, with habitats ranging from deserts to wetlands, mountains to grasslands. Planning routes, arranging accommodation, and ensuring I have the right gear will be crucial.
Elusive Species: Some birds are notoriously hard to find. Whether it’s the African Pitta’s migratory patterns or the Pel’s Fishing Owl’s secretive habits, these rare encounters will test my patience and persistence.
Photographic Perfection: It’s not just about spotting the birds; I’ll need to capture quality photographs too. Lighting, weather, and quick-moving subjects will add an extra layer of complexity.
Time Management: 850 days may seem like a long time, but with 850 species to find, I’ll need to stay consistent and dedicated throughout the journey.
